Please forgive a proud Nonna for bragging, but I have to share this with you. Those of you who know me personally, know that my granddaughter Celia has been studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City for the past two years.
This year’s capstone project for the 300 Fashion Design students was entitled Denim Divine.
From the FIT website:
Denim Divine:
Fashion Design AAS Spring 2024 ExhibitionFor the capstone projects of the Spring 2024 Fashion Design AAS program, students were tasked with creating garments using only denim fabric. As a result, the exhibition focuses on simple forms and techniques, encouraging innovation, creativity and craftsmanship. Included are works selected for Critic Awards by industry mentors who have worked alongside students throughout the semester.
I’m so happy to share with you that Celia’s piece was chosen for the exhibition! Celia used the Goddess Aphrodite as depicted in the Botticelli painting, as her inspiration.
Her dress was constructed from 15 pairs of up-cycled jeans, with tulle, crepe chiffon, and metallic organza as secondary fabrics. Additionally, she utilized glass beads to evoke images of water. The small seashells dangling from these “streams of water” complete the look. What you can’t see, is the beautiful lining fabric of the dress which is a print of this Botticelli painting.
Strips cut from different shades of denim were braided to form the torso and straps of the dress. The lengths of tulle fabric flowing from the hips reinforce the image of falling water. Celia also made full-length tulle gloves studded with pearls to accessorize the dress, which were not shown in the exhibition.
Here is Celia’s sketch for the dress. The video shows her process!
Congratulations to Celia and all the brilliant student designers at FIT! I can’t wait to see what the future will bring for these talented nascent designers!

You should be proud-- she's doing great work! My wife has done some lectures at FIT and a good friend of ours was an adjunct there-- it's quite an impressive place. So exciting to watch these students bring their ideas to life.
So talented! I love that she is your namesake 💚
